HUGE, XL 3.00" Fossil Extinct Mako - Isurus hastalis Shark Tooth from South Carolina

Isurus hastalis is the scientific name for the extremely popular Extinct Mako Shark. This species was the direct ancestor to the most feared (and unfortunately also the most vilified) shark alive today - the Great White Shark. The Great Whites branched off of the Mako Shark family approximately 4 million years ago. Most shark researchers now refer to the Extinct Mako as the Extinct Great White and call it "Carcharodon hastalis". Luckily for collectors, fossil Extinct Mako Shark teeth are found in enough supply to satisfy most of the demand.  Fossilized Extinct Mako Shark teeth come in all sizes (up to over 3" in length), colors, condition/quality, and are sourced from many different locations around the world. Fossil Extinct Mako Shark teeth are most commonly found in the Southeastern United States from Florida to North Carolina, Europe (Belgium, Netherlands, etc.) and in the deserts of South America (Peru, Chile). They also come from Middle Pliocene to Early Miocene fossil deposits worldwide.

Larger teeth over 2.5" are much less commonly found than the smaller teeth in the 1"-1.5" size range and are obviously worth more money. Teeth that reach the magic 3" mark are valued exponentially more as they are rarely seen on the market. Extinct Mako Shark teeth found in perfect condition have razor-sharp edges (these are not serrated but more like a razor), complete root, and enamel. To find a tooth of this quality after 4-15 million years is substantially rarer than finding one that has been exposed to water currents or sand/wind erosion and suffered wear or damage. The vast majority of fossilized Extinct Mako Shark teeth offered for sale will have minimal wear or damage after such a long time waiting to be discovered! So when a tooth is found that is in near pristine condition the value is incrementally more than the normal worn or damaged tooth. Colors or different color patterns can also play an important factor in the value. Extinct Mako Shark teeth can be found in just about every possible hue with the most typically seen being different shades of gray or tan. Any other colors can be quite exotic and more valuable.
