ABOUT THE CHUBUTENSIS SHARK AND FOSSILIZED CHUBUTENSIS SHARK TEETH

Carcharocles chubutensis was the immediate ancestor to the largest shark in history (Carcharocles megalodon), This massive animal lived during the Miocene epoch (approximately 10-20 million years ago) and its ancestors (Carcharocles angustidens, auriculatus, aksuaticus, and Otodus obliquus) date back to around 60 million years ago. This shark reached lengths of at least 45 feet (14 meters). This is more than double the length of the largest Great White Shark but with an overall mass that was much, much greater than the Great White.

For the most part all that remains of this enormous shark are the fossilized chubutensis teeth. Luckily for collectors, fossil chubutensis shark teeth (while quite difficult to find) are plentiful enough to be able to satisfy collector interests. Fossilized chubutensis shark teeth come in all sizes (up to over 5" in length), colors, condition/quality, and are sourced from many different locations around the world. Fossil chubutensis shark teeth are most commonly found in the Eastern United States from Florida to Maryland. Chubutensis teeth are also found in Miocene fossil deposits worldwide (Peru, Italy, Malta, etc.).

Factors in the value of fossilized chubutensis shark teeth are numerous. Rarer localities can command a premium but the most important factors in the value of chubutensis teeth is the overall quality and size. Larger teeth over 3" are much less commonly found than the smaller teeth in the 1"-2" size range and are obviously worth more money. Teeth over 4" are very rare and over 5" are extremely rare. Chubutensis shark teeth found in perfect condition have razor-sharply serrated edges, complete root, enamel, and bourlette. They may or may not have side cusps and are often very difficult to differentiate from a megalodon. To find a high quality tooth after 15 million years is substantially rarer than finding one that has been exposed to water currents or desert erosion and suffered wear or damage. The vast majority of fossilized chubutensis shark teeth offered for sale will have some wear or damage after such a long time waiting to be discovered! So when a tooth is found that is in near pristine condition the value is incrementally more than the normal worn or damaged tooth. Colors or different color patterns can also play an important factor in the value. Chubutensis teeth can be found in just about every possible hue with the most typically seen being different shades of gray. Any other colors can be quite exotic and more valuable.

Fossilized chubutensis shark teeth are a very unique gift item that are ALWAYS appreciated by the recipient as there's really nothing comparable to holding such a large piece of natural history in your hands. Whether you're buying for yourself or someone else you literally can't go wrong with one of our 100% authentic and natural fossil chubutensis shark teeth. Thank you so much for your interest and business!
