Species - Carcharocles megalodon

Size - 6.78" long

Location - Southeast, USA

Age - Pliocene-Miocene - Appx 4-7 million years old

Remarks - This absolute monster of a megalodon measures a staggering 6.78 inches - just shy of its maximum size of a little over 7"! Teeth this size are found maybe once or twice during the CAREER of an avid diver with many thousands of blackwater dives. And that was years ago - today the odds are less than half that. This massive tooth was found approximately 30 years ago and has been tucked away deep inside a private collection until now. This massive specimen has razor-sharply serrated edges, beautiful tan/gray coloration, and is an incredibly solid and heavy tooth weighing more than 1.25lbs (610 grams)!!!

The rarity of teeth increases exponentially by size. A 6" tooth (for example) may be 100x more rare than a 5" tooth and this rarity increases by every .25" in length over 6". By the time you get to something this size (6.75"+) you're talking about something that is literally 2000-3000x (or more) rarer than a 5" tooth. This is substantial because we don't go out and find even a 5" meg every day!!

Almost all teeth we sell will be free of repair or restoration and if there is any it will be clearly labeled and described. This tooth DOES HAVE EXTREMELY MINIMAL RESTORATION WORK DONE TO THE ROOT. This consists merely of filling in a couple small cracks in the center of the root, the bottom edge of the bourlette right above the enamel, and on the flat side (front) of the tooth just where the enamel meets the root. It was done a long time ago we suspect to add to the stability and overall aesthetics. In any case the work really is minor and this tooth is a good 98% natural with only 2% restoration. The enamel, serrations, root lobes, etc. are all totally natural and untouched and the size of this enormous monster is 100% natural and amazing.

You may never find a larger serrated tooth available for sale as this is the rarest meg we currently have in our inventory or have had in many years. This one is worth every single penny and then some!

This 100% authentic fossil megalodon shark tooth was sourced from a river in the state of South Carolina, USA. Here scuba divers brave limited visibility (sometimes absolutely ZERO visibility) to feel around the muddy bottoms by hand to recover these timeless treasures. Dangers faced in the recovery of these teeth include the terrible visibility, very strong river currents, unseen obstacles, boat traffic, sharks, stingrays, and alligators in some locations. The divers who collect these are professional and many have decades of experience.

ABOUT THE MEGALODON SHARK AND FOSSILIZED MEGALODON SHARK TEETH

Carcharocles megalodon was the largest shark in history and one of the world's largest predators in general. This massive animal lived during the Early Pliocene-Late Miocene epochs (approximately 3.5-8 million years ago) and its ancestors (Carcharocles chubutensis, angustidens, auriculatus, aksuaticus, and Otodus obliquus) date back to around 60 million years ago. This shark reached lengths of at least 60 feet (18 meters) with a weight of around 50 TONS. This is more than three times the length of the largest Great White Shark but with an overall mass 25 TIMES more than the Great White. Quite simply the megalodon shark was the most amazing and intriguing shark of all time.

For the most part all that remains of this enormous shark are the fossilized megalodon teeth. Luckily for collectors, fossil megalodon shark teeth (while quite difficult to find) are plentiful enough to be able to satisfy collector interests. Fossilized megalodon shark teeth come in all sizes (up to 7" in length), colors, condition/quality, and are sourced from many different locations around the world. Fossil megalodon shark teeth are most commonly found in the Southeastern United States from Florida to North Carolina although there are many more isolated locations where they occur in Virginia, Maryland, and California. Megalodon teeth are also found in Pliocene/Miocene fossil deposits worldwide (Peru, Japan, Indonesia, Belgium, Morocco, etc. etc.).

Factors in the value of fossilized megalodon shark teeth are numerous. Rarer localities can command a premium but the most important factors in the value of megalodon teeth is the overall quality and size. Larger teeth over 5" are much less commonly found than the smaller teeth in the 3"-4" size range and are obviously worth more money. Megalodon shark teeth found in perfect condition have razor-sharply serrated edges, complete root, enamel, and bourlette. To find a tooth of this quality after 5 million years is substantially rarer than finding one that has been exposed to water currents and suffered wear or damage. The vast majority of fossilized megalodon shark teeth offered for sale will have some wear or damage after such a long time waiting to be discovered! So when a tooth is found that is in near pristine condition the value is incrementally more than the normal worn or damaged tooth. Colors or different color patterns can also play an important factor in the value. Megalodon teeth can be found in just about every possible hue with the most typically seen being different shades of gray. Any other colors can be quite exotic and more valuable.

Fossilized megalodon shark teeth are a very unique gift item that are ALWAYS appreciated by the recipient as there's really nothing comparable to holding such a large piece of natural history in your hands. Whether you're buying for yourself or someone else you literally can't go wrong with one of our 100% authentic and natural fossil megalodon shark teeth. Thank you so much for your interest and business!
