ABOUT THE GREAT WHITE SHARK AND FOSSILIZED GREAT WHITE SHARK TEETH
Carcharodon carcharias is the scientific name for the world famous Great White Shark. This magnificent animal is one of the largest sharks in the world and definitely the most feared and, unfortunately, also the most vilified. Great White Sharks are found worldwide today after branching off of the Mako Shark family approximately 4 million years ago. It is widely known as the top predator for most of its range with only the modern Orca (Killer Whale) occasionally preying on adult Great Whites.
We only sell fossilized Great White Shark teeth from sharks that lived millions of years ago. Modern (non-fossilized pure white) Great White Sharks are a protected species and trade in their teeth is generally not allowed and we will not offer any of these for sale. Luckily for collectors, fossil Great White Shark teeth are found in enough supply to satisfy most of the demand. Fossilized Great White Shark teeth come in all sizes (up to 3" in length), colors, condition/quality, and are sourced from many different locations around the world. Fossil Great White Shark teeth are most commonly found in the Southeastern United States from Florida to North Carolina and in the deserts of South America (Peru, Chile). They also come from Middle Pliocene to Pleistocene fossil deposits worldwide.
Factors in the value of fossilized Great White shark teeth are numerous. Rarer localities can command a premium but the most important factors in the value of megalodon teeth is the overall quality and size. Larger teeth over 2" are much less commonly found than the smaller teeth in the 1"-1.5" size range and are obviously worth more money. Great White shark teeth found in perfect condition have razor-sharply serrated edges, complete root, and enamel. To find a tooth of this quality after 2-3 million years is substantially rarer than finding one that has been exposed to water currents or sand/wind erosion and suffered wear or damage. The vast majority of fossilized Great White Shark teeth offered for sale will have minimal wear or damage after such a long time waiting to be discovered! So when a tooth is found that is in near pristine condition the value is incrementally more than the normal worn or damaged tooth. Colors or different color patterns can also play an important factor in the value. Great White teeth can be found in just about every possible hue with the most typically seen being different shades of gray. Any other colors can be quite exotic and more valuable.
Fossilized Great White Shark teeth are a very unique gift item that are ALWAYS appreciated by the recipient as there's really nothing comparable to holding such a piece of natural history in your hands.
