THE RECOGNIZED NATURAL LENGTH WORLD RECORD MEGALODON TOOTH combined for sale with a HUGE MODERN GREAT WHITE SHARK JAW WITH 2 3/8 inch TEETH. This listing is something that only one collector has had an opportunity to purchase before and will probably be the last time these items will be seen again for many many years. For sale here is a COMBINATION DEAL ONLY for both the meg tooth and GW jaw.
First for the megalodon tooth - while there is no governing body of shark tooth collecting this meg is widely recognized by dealers and high-end collectors as the LARGEST UNRESTORED LENGTH MEGALODON TOOTH EVER FOUND. This is an opinion that we will also acknowledge and fully back in writing. We have seen plenty of huge 7 inch and up teeth that were more putty than tooth. If you want to use this definition as a reliable basis then do not read further because you can spend the same amount of money on something mostly man-made but technically larger. This meg is exactly 7.102 inches long x 5.07 inches wide with absolutely no restoration to the tip, root corner, or anything in-between that would add to the length. Is this the world record by much - no. There have been a couple other natural 7 inch teeth found in the past 3 years that are 100 percent natural and almost as large but this still holds the record.
History of the tooth - it was found by diver Randy Owens in a South Carolina river probably close to 15 years ago. When found the tooth was complete but had some enamel peel (missing enamel in the center) on both sides. Tooth was then sold to the late Vito Bertucci who commissioned extremely professional restoration work to repair the missing enamel (again, only enamel has been restored). While at a fossil show the tooth was accidentally dinged against the table and the very tip serration either almost came off or was nicked off. Either way it has been stabilized with a bit of fossil glue (we're talking about something the size of a pinhead here) and it does NOT add to the overall length of the tooth. If anything it makes it just a hair shorter than it was originally but it is almost impossible to notice. Vito held onto the tooth for about a decade before selling it to a private collector at a major fossil show several years ago. We acted as an unpaid broker in the deal. The tooth has since been held in that world-class private collection where it still resides to this day.
Next for the jaw - this is something we normally will not offer for sale as we do not like representing modern specimens, only fossils. However the terms of sale of the megalodon tooth is that it will ONLY be sold as a package deal with this Great White jaw. This is an enormous and equally valuable jaw from a huge shark caught in the 1980s. Exact location this jaw came from is not known for certain but I have vague memories of it coming from Australia. Regardless of where it came from this shark was caught MANY years before the ban on selling modern GW items went into effect a couple years ago so it is legal to trade. The jaw is 28 inches wide x 28 inches tall x 11.5 inches deep with the largest anterior teeth measuring 2.37 inches in length. This jaw was acquired by the same collector a few years ago in the same deal with Vito for the world record megalodon tooth. It is unknown how long Vito owned the jaws but they were prepared long ago by Dr. Gordon Hubbell. The method of preparation is to remove all teeth, completely clean the jaw and teeth of all excess cartilage, whiten everything, remove broken teeth from the first row, and finally to replace the teeth in exact position with epoxy and only perfect teeth showing. It is a spectacular and very rare jaw to own.
We have loaded fairly large pictures of both items but have the same pictures available in extremely high resolution if you need very close examination. This tooth has also been fully authenticated through CT-SCAN to have no repair other than what is listed and pictures of this are available. We will discuss terms of sale with any buyer but we strongly request that ONLY EXTREMELY SERIOUS BUYERS SHOULD INQUIRE. While price is not disclosed (offers are accepted) this will be the most expensive pair ever to be sold or they will not be sold. Do not anticipate this going for as little as $10-$20,000 or anywhere even remotely close as either of these items is worth more than that by itself. Sorry to be blunt about this but we know there will be a blizzard of emails to follow about the price and (in the sake of time) we need to weed them out a little ahead of time. Thank you for looking and serious buyers please feel free to ask any questions you may need and we will be happy to help. Please keep in mind that (for only the second time in 10 years) the items we are selling are NOT in our physical possession. We will be working closely with the seller to answer all questions but may not be able to respond immediately as we normally do. Thank you for your interest!!
